About us

SPICI – Integrated Public Safety in Smart Cities is a project funded by FINEP and supported by FUNPEC/UFRN – BRAZIL. It operates in the field of public safety, utilizing 5G technologies within a smart city framework.

The project team includes permanent faculty members from DIMAp and IMD/UFRN, as well as PhD, Master’s, and undergraduate research students. Additionally, the project maintains a partnership with the National Institute of Software Engineering (INES).

Objective

The objective of SPICI is to develop integrated public safety applications leveraging 5G technologies.

The applications under development within the project have strict requirements for reliable communication, high availability, and low latency in information transfer. Consequently, they require a 5G network infrastructure that provides high capacity and communication speed, supporting a massive number of devices with minimal latency.

Challenges

This proposal addresses several challenges, including integrating heterogeneous devices into the communication infrastructure, ensuring interoperability, and improving operational efficiency. Furthermore, the project seeks efficient ways to manage edge computing and cloud storage, aiming to optimize resource allocation and the response speed to critical events.

Advanced Artificial Intelligence techniques will be applied for automated incident detection and advanced multimedia data analysis. The goal is to enhance the “situational awareness” of public safety agents, that is, to broaden their perception of elements and contextual events, thereby improving their understanding of the current situation and enabling reliable projections of what might happen next.
